Last Friday our class was visited by Darcy Reaume and Daniella Gullo who both hail from OneMethod to talk to our class about Social Media Marketing. Darcy, a former grad of this program, is the Design Director at OneMethod and manages the design team. Daniella, is the Social Media Manager and leads the social media team. OneMethod has a wide variety of clients ranging from Svedka Vodka, Nestle Brands (KitKat, Smarties, etc), Anchor Bay, Amir Johnson and Jackson Triggs just to name a few.
On March 28th, Miranda Urbanski came to speak to our class. The main two messages behind her presentation were “There’s more than one way to get where you’re going” and “Always have a Plan B.” And she certainly had a different route in her career which led her to where she is now as the Manager of Web Marketing Communications at Bell Mobility.
Miranda spoke about her long school and work journey, which started out with a Bachelor of Arts and also summer programs in Italy specializing in painting. Then when applying to more schooling she applied to our program, then called New Media Design, as her Plan B and she said it was one of her most important educational experiences.
Alexander Younger, President and CEO of Design Lab came on March 21 to talk to our class about workplace culture and processes.
Alexander started Design Lab 22 years ago, it is a design agency and marketing firm out of Toronto that works with clients such as: RBC Financial, The Beer Store, Holt Renfrew, Laura Secord and much more. Another fun fact about Design Lab: the entire office is run off of solar panels on the roof and they are actively trying to lessen their carbon footprint. I thought this was incredibly interesting as working in design agencies all the computers use so much energy! It is really great to hear they are doing their part for the environment. Below is a link to their green design lab website for more information:
On March 14th, our class was visited by Justin Cook, Director of Internet Marketing at 9thCo. Justin came to speak to our class about his company, 9thCo. and about his specialty, SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Last Friday the 7th our whole class piled into cars and drove to The Weather Network main headquarters in Oakville. We were met in the lobby by Stacey Litrenta, Corporate Recruiter at the Weather Network who led us into a large conference room where we gathered around a large table as we sat for an impressive presentation from several VPs, Directors, and employees (a couple of them even being alumni of our program).
John Gallant, VP of Design & User Experience and Stacey started off the presentation with some background about The Weather Network. Something I did not know, that The Weather Network is actually a part of Pelmorex Media Inc which also owns companies such as MeteoMedia, Eltiempo.ca, as well as Beat the Traffic.
Why do we need visualizations?
On Friday 14th our class sat in a lecture by Isabel Meirelles, a professor of Information Design and Motion Graphics at Northeastern University. She spoke about Information Visualizations (basically Info-graphics and charting information in pleasing ways that speak about the context of the information).
On Jan 31st our class was visited by two employees from Creative Niche. Creative Niche is a recruitment and workforce management firm. They connect professionals in the advertising, communications, design, marketing and interactive fields with their clients’ job opportunities.

Craig Hodges, Relationship Manager
Craig had 15 years of experience in advertising and marketing before going into creative recruiting for over 5 years now.
Adele and Craig gave us some great advice about building our resumes and our own brand to best represent ourselves when we are trying to enter into the workforce this coming April.
